 Exercising on an empty stomach

You will burn more fat but don't expect fat-melting miracles. Recent studies show that working out on an empty stomach might burn a few more fat calories than when you work out an hour or two after eating, but total calorie burn is about the same. And, total calorie burn is what really counts when it comes to fitting in a smaller size.

In reality, the choice about when to eat is yours. You could try this experiment: Eat a snack of about 200 calories, such as banana with peanut butter, whole grain crackers and low fat cheese, or an energy bar, 1 to 2 hours before exercise. Note how you perform. The next day exercise without eating and note any differences. Chances are you will not feel too great with the latter option.

Exercising on an empty stomach can backfire by decreasing your calorie burn if you are too tired to complete your workout.

Fitness instructors and nutritionists agree that many people lose nutrients during physical activity and that you must compensate for these somehow. The best advice is to eat a balanced diet. By filling your body prior to and after a work out, can have increased benefits in terms of muscle tone.
